Basmati rice, known as the "king of Rice," is a type of long-grain rice that is famous for its delicate flavour and fragrant aroma. This variety of rice has a rich history, with reports of its existence dating back to the early 19th century in India. Although its name may have changed over time, the high quality and unique scent of Basmati rice have remained constant.
Non-Basmati rice refers to any type of rice that is not of the Basmati variety. In fact, there are an estimated 10,000 different varieties of rice in the world, with the majority being grown in India. However, it's important to note that Basmati rice only makes up 1% of the total rice production in India. Non-Basmati rice can come in many different shapes and sizes, including long and slender, short and thick, round, and even shaped like beads.
